Finally got around to this one. I'd seen a whole lot of bits and pieces of it, but had very little idea how it all strung together.
Dropping us straight in with an established Superman, a world of pre-existing experienced superheroes, and an already-developing geopolitical consequence was a much-needed masterstroke. Other than one thing it was perfect: the major story turns (at either end of Act 2) are about Superman facing a challenge to the core of his self, his identity, and his values. The action and drama are phenomenally directed, but the intricacy and pace of them also distract from and water down that core story.
The interview between Lois and Superman at the beginning is the best scene I've seen between two actors in a superhero movie, period, but it felt like it came too soon and half of the threads it set up got outcompeted for space in the rest of the story. I love a good action sequence, don't get me wrong, but I don't care about the tightest, most spectacular action sequence half as much as I care about a scene like that.
